Devils' Reign

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- The New Jersey Devils finally exorcised their playoff demons on Friday night when they won their first Stanley Cup championship, defeating the Calgary Flames 3-2 in a decisive Game 7 at Meadowlands Arena. The Devils also lifted the Presidents' Trophy curse when they became the first franchise in league history to have best overall regular season record and best postseason record, going on a 16-9 run in capturing their first Stanley Cup.

Martin Brodeur, who starred in net for all of New Jersey's 25 playoff games, was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the playoff's most valuable player. Brodeur posted a 16-9 record, with a 3.02 goals against average and a .889 save percentage.

Although the Devils' stingy defense limited the Flames to only 20 shots in Game 7, it was Calgary who opened up the scoring when Flames forward Dave Reid scored a shorthanded goal at 6:45 in the first period, but Peter Forsberg tied the game when he scored his team-leading 11th goal of the postseason.

The Devils took a 2-1 lead in the second period when Bill Guerin set up John LeClair for his eighth goal of the playoffs, but the Flames would answer back less than five minutes into the third period. Pavel Bure drew the game even at 2-2 in the third and recorded his league leading 31st point of the playoffs.

Fans were anticipating a nail-biting sudden death overtime to determine the next Stanley Cup champion, until New Jersey Devils rookie forward Shane Doan scored the Cup-clinching goal midway through regulation.

The Devils' disciplined play smothered the Flames' offense in the final 20 minutes, as they were only able to muster six shots on goal in the final period.

As the clock ticked down to zero, 17,000 jubilant Devils fans erupted when the final horn blasted inside The Swamp.

The Devils' faithful then showered RHS Commissioner Chris Mowbray with a chorus of boos when he stepped onto the ice to present the Stanley Cup to team captain Scott Stevens, who is in his ninth season with the team. When asked if he plans to retire as a champion, Stevens responded, "I have no plans on retiring. I want to keep playing, and I want to be back for yet another championship run."

Devils Advance to the Stanley Cup Final

OTTAWA (AP) -- The New Jersey Devils are headed to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in franchise history. After years of regular season success that resulted in early playoff exits, the Devils captured their first Prince of Wales Conference championship by defeating the Ottawa Senators in Game 6 at the Ottawa Civic Centre.

After facing a two-goal deficit early in the second period, the Devils responded with five unanswered goals in a 5-2 victory that clinched their berth to the championship round. It was also the third consecutive game in which the Devils defeated the Senators by a score of 5-2.

Now the Devils await the winner of the Campbell Conference final between the Los Angeles Kings and the Calgary Flames, who will be facing off in Game 7 in Los Angeles on Friday night.
